Members Spotlight: 88 Degrees

March 4, 2017

It seems more like 3 years, not 13 since 88 first appeared in the Kirriemuir town center. The minute Philip and Johanna sat down in the window of what was the old bookshop at the time, they knew that this was where 88 would be, and it remains their favourite spot for their pre opening morning coffee. A lot has changed since they started, but it's still a place where you can go in and forget whatever is going on in your life for half an hour. In 2010 they started making their artisan chocolates, using only single origin chocolate at a time when everyone was using Belgian, and have steadfastly refused to add any preservatives or additives to make them last longer - fresh really is best.

“Unbelievably, in our first year, we won 2 Gold Taste Awards, although even more surreal was being filmed for Local Food Heroes and getting to cook for Gary Rhodes in Plymouth, mind you not half as odd as the hotel we stayed in whilst we were there, but that's another story entirely. Over the years, there have been chances to expand, but then we would lose what we love about our shop - it's still small enough that we can make everything ourselves, change the menu every day and we get the chance to talk with our customers. We're almost embarrassed to call it a job!“

This truly is an absolute gem of a coffee shop, you will struggle to find more passionate people, Philip and Johanna really do put everything in to what they do. We can not recommend this great shop enough. An absolute must if you are visiting Angus.

17 High Street, Kirriemuir, Angus.
